Richard J.T. Klein is a senior research fellow at the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) in Sweden and a visiting researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany. At SEI he leads the Stockholm-based Climate and Energy team and coordinates climate policy research across all SEI centres.

His research interests include methodological aspects of vulnerability assessment, societal adaptation to climate change, and integration of climate and development policy. He has been involved in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change since 1994, most recently as coordinating lead author in the Fourth Assessment Report. He also contributed to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and to the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change.

Richard holds a PhD (magna cum laude) in environmental geography (University of Kiel, Germany), as well as master's degrees (distinction) in quaternary geology (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands) and environmental sciences (University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK). To date he has produced around seventy journal articles, book chapters and reports, edited two books and two special journal issues and contributed to numerous national and international workshops and conferences. He is the editor-in-chief of the international journal Climate and Development.
