Forestry case study 2009-2010
The second case study within Mistra-SWECIA will focus on the forestry sector in Sweden. The forestry sector has a long planning horizon. Adaptation measures will therefore have to guard against uncertainties over both the short and the long term regarding climate, as well as other factors. The forestry sector has a multi-layered structure going from global supply systems and world markets, through international and national policy and legislation, down to multinational and national companies and individual forest owners. The forestry companies are hierarchies with decision-making power distributed throughout the organizations. As a case study, the forestry sector will provide room for studying how adaptation needs and opportunities are perceived and acted upon at different operational levels. Mistra-SWECIA will draw general conclusions about how new information and insights are shared and acted upon within such hierarchies.
Some programme partners are involved in research directly connected to the forestry sector. The delineation and narrowing down of the potentially vast scope of the forestry case study will be an important first step when the work starts in early 2009.
The forestry case study will run for two years. A close collaboration with the partly Mistra-funded Future Forests programme (also starting in 2009) is envisioned.
