Introduction to the Mistra-SWECIA Newsletter No 2:09
Welcome to the second issue of the Mistra-SWECIA Newsletter 2009! It has been a while since the previous issue of the Mistra-SWECIA newsletter. The reason is not a lack of material, but the intensive activity that has marked this year. We are in earnest starting to harvest our first research efforts, have been present in scientific and user meetings, and are also taking stock of the first two years of our collaboration. It is rather exciting to realise that what we pursue in Mistra-SWECIA has a very concrete counterpart on international arenas. The recent World Climate Conference 3 held in Geneva makes the case of the need of both strengthening climate research activities and creating more interaction for related information and services, not least to enable better climate adaptation. The next IPCC assessment report also takes an even closer and richer look at adaptation aspects, alongside physical climate science and, mitigation alternatives. Financial aspects are among the red-hot ones in the upcoming CoP15 in Copenhagen.
Climate and climate adaptation is pursued by many, on most sectors and on all scales. Inferences on the global scale are already made above. The distance to local scale can, however, be considerable, which in itself is researchable. What happens on the local scale is in many ways as complicated as what takes place on the international gatherings. In this Newsletter, we tell both on the adaptation space in a specific Swedish setting, and also gear up for our next Case Study that will look into forestry. On a more natural sciences note, there is a piece on at first sight a very academic research question that nevertheless is quite relevant for the regional climate outlook.
Hope you agree!
