World Modelling Summit for Climate Prediction 2008

Markku Rummukainen reports from the recent World Modelling Summit for Climate Prediction, held at ECMWF in May 2008. Modern climate modelling has been instrumental for provision of relevant scientific information for policy-makers. This is not least evident from the impact of the successive IPCC Assessments, and is also reflected in the public debate and political arenas. Many scientific advances have been made. At the same time the need of specific information for adaptation and mitigation efforts is becoming ever more urgent. The Summit endorses a Climate Prediction Project and a “world climate research facility for climate prediction", as means for a quantum leap in climate modelling.

Mistra-SWECIA Science seminar: The effects of different energy sources and technological progress on climate change
Fossil energy and technological progress are two important factors that potentially influence climate change. Today, the main source of energy is fossil energy, and its use generates CO2-emissions with global warming as result. Technological progress can however improve the energy efficiency and potentially lead to the implementation of alternative clean energy sources that may partially or fully...
