Introduction to the Mistra-SWECIA Newsletter No 1:09

Welcome to the first issue of the Mistra SWECIA Newsletter 2009!
The present Newsletter focuses on new Mistra-SWECIA results on regional climate modelling
and research into adaptation processes. These are both examples of necessary knowledge that
pertain to dealing with climate adaptation. Yet another highlighted aspect is the state of
knowledge on the climate system that frames both regional climate change and the overall
societal processes on dealing with climate change.

One shared feature of the articles, which also is true in a more general sense, is that it is not really lack of knowledge that makes climate change a complex issue to deal with. There certainly is knowledge that we still miss, but there also is knowledge that we have, without always being able to put it to use. One reason probably is that the knowledge comes with inherent uncertainties, and another is that communication between research and society is not always straightforward. When one digs deeper into these issues, it becomes evident that better ways to communicate are needed also within user communities and across scientific disciplines. Learning, both social learning and learning more about the climate system, are keys to efforts on a better future.

Mistra-SWECIA Science seminar: The effects of different energy sources and technological progress on climate change
Fossil energy and technological progress are two important factors that potentially influence climate change. Today, the main source of energy is fossil energy, and its use generates CO2-emissions with global warming as result. Technological progress can however improve the energy efficiency and potentially lead to the implementation of alternative clean energy sources that may partially or fully...
